Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions

How often does my HVAC unit need maintenance?

Homeowners throughout Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Indio, La Quinta, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Desert Hot Springs, Bermuda Dunes, Indian Wells, Coachella, and the entire Coachella Valley should schedule HVAC maintenance at least once a year. Because our summers regularly exceed 110°F, preventive maintenance helps avoid costly breakdowns.

How long does an air conditioner last in Southern California?

Most central air conditioning systems last 15–20 years with proper maintenance. However, in hot climates like Palm Springs, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, and the Coachella Valley, heavy summer use can shorten the lifespan. Annual maintenance from SoCal Air Conditioning & Heating helps maximize the life of your AC system.

How much does a new air conditioning system cost?

The cost of a new HVAC system depends on your home's size, duct-work, equipment efficiency, and installation requirements. Most complete residential HVAC replacements range from $6,000 to $18,000+. We provide free estimates and financing options to help homeowners throughout the Coachella Valley find the right system for their budget.

Why is my AC blowing hot air?

If your air conditioner is blowing warm or hot air instead of cool air, don't panic—this is one of the most common AC problems homeowners experience in the Coachella Valley. Several issues could be causing the problem, including:

  • A dirty or clogged air filter restricting airflow
  • A thermostat set incorrectly or with low batteries
  • Low refrigerant due to a leak
  • A frozen evaporator coil
  • A tripped circuit breaker affecting the outdoor condenser
  • A dirty condenser coil
  • A failing compressor or capacitor

1. Before calling for service, check that your thermostat is set to "Cool" and the temperature is lower than the current room temperature.
2. Replace your air filter if it's dirty, and
3. Check your electrical panel for any tripped breakers.

If your AC is still blowing hot air, it's time to schedule a professional inspection. Continuing to run the system can lead to higher energy bills and potentially more expensive repairs.
At SoCal Air Conditioning & Heating, we provide fast, reliable AC repair throughout Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Indio, La Quinta, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Desert Hot Springs, Indian Wells, Bermuda Dunes, Coachella, and the entire Coachella Valley. Our experienced technicians will diagnose the problem quickly and restore your home's comfort as soon as possible.

Should I set my thermostat fan switch to "auto" or "on" when running my AC?

For most homeowners, the "Auto" setting is the best choice. When your thermostat fan is set to Auto, the blower only runs when your air conditioner is actively cooling your home. This helps reduce energy consumption, lowers utility bills, and allows your system to remove humidity more effectively—an important benefit during the hot summers in the Coachella Valley.

The "On" setting keeps the fan running continuously, even when your air conditioner isn't cooling. While this provides constant air circulation and can help distribute temperatures more evenly throughout your home, it may also increase your electricity usage and, in some cases, reduce your home's ability to remove humidity.

Choose "Auto" if you want:

  • Lower energy bills
  • Better humidity control
  • Less wear on your blower motor
  • Improved overall system efficiency

Choose "On" if you want:

  • Continuous air circulation
  • More even temperatures between rooms
  • Better filtration for homes with allergies or pets (when using a high-quality air filter)

If you're unsure which setting is best for your HVAC system, the experienced technicians at SoCal Air Conditioning & Heating can help. We provide professional HVAC maintenance, thermostat inspections, and energy-saving recommendations for homeowners in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta, Indio, Desert Hot Springs, Indian Wells, Bermuda Dunes, Coachella, and throughout the Coachella Valley.
